What is NetClockSync?
NetClockSync synchronizes the clocks of Macintosh computers over a network. This is often very useful for streamlining network operations such as backups, distributed e-mail, user activity logging, and so forth.
How does NetClockSync work?
The NetClockSync Server program must be running on one computer (the server).
The time on this computer will be used to set the time on the other computers.
When the NetClockSync Client is run on a different computer (not the server),
the Client will register on the network, look for a NetClockSync Server,
obtain the current time of the server, set the clock of the client computer
to that time, and then Quit.
Hints
- Place an alias of the NetClockSync Server program into 'Startup Items'
within the System Folder of your server, the NetClockSync Server will
launch each time the server computer is started.
- Place an alias of the NetClockSync Client program in Startup Items'
of each computer on your network. Every time a computer is started it
will automatically synchonize its' time to the server clock.
- If the 'Moof' sound doesn't do it for you, simply use ResEdit to replace the
'snd ' resource (or you can delete it altogether without ANY side-effects).
- NetClockSync Server program does not 'Moof' when in the background.
Limitations
- NetClockSync only works for Macintoshes that are in the same logical
AppleTalk Zone as the NetClockSync server.
- Currently there is no timeout in the client, so if a NetClockSync Server
is not found the client will poll until one is started (the user can stop
the client by typing Command-Q).
- NetClockSync does not set localized information such as Daylight Savings
Time, or geographic location.
Possible Future Enhancements
- Setting of Localized information on client workstations.
- Server synchronization to one of the atomic clocks (either dialup or through
Internet).
- Multiple zone capabilities.
